Founded in 1990, the CMAE celebrates our area’s wonderful artistic talent in an exhibition open to everyone living on The Dorrigo Plateau. The Plateau is a large area and includes the village communities of Maynard’s Plains at Mountain Top through Dorrigo township, Fernbrook and Deer Vale to Ebor in the west; Cascade and Megan to the north-east, North Dorrigo, Paddy’s Plains, Bostobrick, Hernani, and Dundurrabin to the north-west. The CMAE brings together all these communities on the Dorrigo Plateau.
Since its inception, the CMAE has become a flagship event of the area, attracting over 2,000 visitors a year. Initiated by the Dorrigo Visual Arts Group, the exhibition is now organised by a subcommittee of the Arts Council of The Dorrigo, Inc.
As you move around the hall, you’ll find four different display areas. In the main body of the hall is the Creative Mountain Art Exhibition itself, with a selection of painting, drawing, etching, photography, jewellery, ceramics, woodwork, textiles, and sculpture. This includes the popular Shoebox Sculpture Competition. On the stage is the Youth Art Exhibition, while in the Meeting Room at the back of the Hall is a display of quilts by Plateau quilters.
The CMAE theme this year is Ahead in the Clouds. Often as you drive up from the coast, you’ll see Dorrigo Mountain ahead of you wrapped in clouds. So we started with that idea, but played on it metaphorically to ask artists to imagine the future for the Dorrigo Plateau. What do they love about the Plateau? What would they like to see happen up here ‘in the clouds’? Or maybe it’s a dystopian interpretation: what don’t they like, or what do they fear for our future? Creativity and imagination are essential for building a good quality of life, and for solving problems with skill and insight. Artists are vital to every community and the CMAE celebrates the vision of all our Plateau artists and artisans. Enjoy!
